Sihanoukville beach town

Sunset from Wat Leu is spectacular on a clear day.

Known for most of her history as Kompong Som this beach resort has attracted visitors since only 1955. The fishing village is still there and a colourful side trip from the white sandy beaches. Just four hours by road from Phnom Pehn on the country's best road the resort is still quiet and the excesses of neighbouring countries beaches is still thankfully absent.

Boats to Koh Khong with connecting transport to Trang make travel to Thailand's south east easy.

Ironically the quiet resort has THREE casino's. Mainly playgrounds for Thai's and Chinese they attract groups of gamblers from around the region and do little to alter the laid back small town feel.

Restaurants serve a range of foods of various nationalities. Mainly featured are Khmer, Chinese, Thai, Western. There are a few others but the large beachside restaurants found next door in Thailand have yet to appear.

Six kilometres line the coast around the town which is situated inland. Sokha is the most popular palm lined. The north of the stretch has been renamed Serependipity has a number of small restaurants and inner tubes for available for rent. Ochheuenteal is the quietest although part of it is being used as a golf links so this may change. Independence is the widest and more visited at the north end where the local landmark, the same named hotel is located on an overlooking hill. Victory consists of two beaches divided by a rocky knoll mid way. Great place for sunsets as the fleet of fishing boats make their way out for their nightly catch. Holiday Palace casino is just across the road for those whose holiday is not complete without a flutter.

A Vietnamese consulate is operational from the north into town from Weather station hill. Visas for Vietnam are generally issued quicker here than in Phnom Pehn.

Visitors should expect a quiet beach trip with little late night distractions. The charm of this active port and beach location for many is her innocent charm. Get here while it lasts.
