following the pull out of all other regional carriers. Even Lao Aviation, the
national airline, pulled the plug. Poor load factors and the regional financial
crisis were blamed. Airlines that ceased operations were Silk Air, Malaysian, China
Yunnan and Lao Aviation, Royal Air Cambodge and China Yunnan Airlines. This condition is sure to have an impact on overseas tourist arrivals. Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Yunnan passengers would have to come via Bangkok in order to travel to the land locked country. Meanwhile Thai International were reporting increased load factors of 85% and are confident of reaching their 100% target. Hotels, on the other hand were decrying their lot with decreases from 80-40% of occupancy. Some of the airlines were expected to re-commence services when the new airport is planned to open in October. Visit Lao year is due to commence at the start of 1998. |
