ThailandKrabi opens AirportKrabi's first commercial airport opened for business on Monday 12th July. Thai Airways and PB air, the newest passenger airline in Thailand, operate flights to the holiday resort. The one way fare from Bangkok is around US$60 per adult. Previously visitors had to fly to Phuket airport and travel up to three hours to reach the destination. Krabi has hotel room capacity of under 5000 rooms and there is doubt if this carrying capacity can be expanded to meet growing demand. The airport, which is 13km from Krabi town, can cater for up to two B737 aircraft. Thai Airways offer a Bangkok-Krabi-Bangkok flight on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays whilst PB Air fly on Wednesdays, Saturdays and Sundays until the end of October. From November, which marks the start of the winter schedule, both airlines expect to be arriving on a daily basis. Meanwhile Bangkok Airways plan a Samui - Krabi link. Last year Krabi welcomed 800,000 visitors with 60% of that number made up of visitors from Europe. With the new service now in operation many visitors are expected to head straight to Krabi and bypass Phuket altogether. Northern Thailand - Laos, Cambodia LinkBangkok Airways hopes to link Sukothai (Thailand) with Luang Prabang (Laos) and Siem Reap (Cambodia) in late October. These three world heritage sites are likely to be popular with international and regional travellers and are expected to fly three to four flights per week. Silkair quits JakartaSilk air have stated that they will stop flying to the Indonesian capital from 26th July. The region carrier of Singapore Airlines cited declining passenger volume when deciding to quit the 12 times weekly service. The airline is to focus on other Indonesian destinations instead. |
