Q. Are you a licensed Trekking operator?
A. Of course, in fact our manager is the president of the Jungle Trekking Club of Northern
Thailand which advises the Tourist Authority of Thailand on environmental issues and
tribal concerns. Our licence number is 23/0037. We
have been operating tours and treks since 1988..Q. How do I book a trek
with you?
A. Simply follow the "booking" link at the
top of each page. This takes you to our on-line form, after completion we will then send
confirmation to you and details of your trip. We accept Visa,
MasterCard and American
Express. You can also book by phone or fax. The numbers appear at the bottom of each page.
Q. Can your guides speak English and tribal languages?
A. Naturally, they are all trained at the University and have Tourist Authority
certificates and badges. Some of them come from the tribal villages themselves so their
work helps them to financially support their communities.
Q. How long have you been operating Treks?
A. Since 1988. We were one of the first companies in the country with qualified guides
showing trekkers the wonders of the area.
Q. How big are your groups?
A. Around eight - ten persons. We organise porters to carry. additional supplies
for larger groups. If you have a larger group wishing to trek together this can easily be
arranged.
Q. How long do we walk each day?
A. Depending on the day's activities, which may include bamboo
rafting or other attractions, from two to eight hours per day. The purpose of a trek is not to cover as much
ground as possible but to enjoy the wonderful scenery, unique cultures, astounding natural
beauty and a completely different way of life.
Q. What is the overnight accommodation like?
A. Exactly the same as the mountain tribes use themselves - basic and authentic.
Check out the virtual trek for more information and photographs
that should answer such like queries.
Q. What is suitable ages for trekking?
A. Provided a reasonable standard of fitness, e.g. being able to walk 15 km's in
one day, is maintained then there are no real age barrier. We do not recommend taking
children under seven years old.
Q. What is the best time to go?
A. Anytime of year is fine. Have a look at our weather
pages from the home page for more details about the rainfall and climate in the area.
Q. What about my equipment, I have a video camera and will need to charge the
batteries?
A. Charge as much as you can before you leave because most villages do not have
electric supply or it is unsuitable for this type of appliance.
Q. Can I smoke opium on the trek?
A. Sorry, not with our company. We operate in compliance with the law and we
don't encourage these reckless types of activity.
Q. How do you price your treks?
A. Our trip rates are worked out according to the types of adventure in the
itinerary and value is always emphasised. The tribes derive direct income from our company
that helps to sustain their communities. Whilst we are certainly not the cheapest tour
operator our rates emphasis value and quality. With treks working out around US$35 per
day including accommodation, food activities and in the company of a professional trekking guide we think you will agree that this is a very cost
effective way to enjoy a totally new and unique experience.
Q. After the trek I want to go to the South to lay on a beach. Can you arrange
this?
A. Thaifocus can arrange flights, trains, hotel accommodation, car rentals and
Indo-China visa's. This translates to a simple and convenient way to organise your entire
trip. As we live here we can give you the most up-to-date information available, help you
with your plans and make suggestions based on your criteria.
Q. I have to be back early to catch a 5pm flight can you get me back in time?
A. We cannot guarantee it unless you take a private tour. The jungle is not
subject to timetables and a slow raft or similar will make it difficult to get back
early. We also do not want to rush the other guests so it is necessary to organise a
private trek. Even then we recommend that you stay one more night in Chiang Mai.
